Ah, Jerry Seinfield. I listen to this excerpt a few times a year and in between handing out Halloween candy to the neighborhood kids. Hilarious and so true! But perhaps, you are a little more conscious about what goes into the mouth’s of your children than the sugar and chemical laden name brand candy. Baby Ruth: 33 grams of sugar. Ingredients – Sugar, Roasted Peanuts, Corn Syrup, Partially Hydrogenated Palm Kernel and Coconut Oil, Nonfat Milk, Cocoa, High-Fructose Corn Syrup and less than 1% of Glycerin, Whey, Dextrose, Salt, Monoglyceride, Soy lecithin, Soybean Oil, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Carrageenan, TBHQ, Citric Acid and caramel color.
Milky Way: 35 grams of sugar. Three Musketeers: 40 grams of Sugar. Ingredients – Milk Chocolate (cocoa butter, lactose, skim milk, milk fat, and soy lecithin), Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Oil and/or Palm Oil, less than 2% processed with Alkali, Salt, Egg Whites, Artificial and Natural Flavors.
Skittles: 47 grams of sugar. Ingredients - Sugar, Corn Syrup, Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Oil, Apple Juice from Concentrate, less than 2% – Citric Acid, Dextrin, Modified Corn Starch, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Coloring (includes yellow 6 lake, red 40 lake, yellow 5 lake, blue 2 lake, yellow 5, red 40, yellow 6, blue 1 lake, blue 1), Ascorbic Acid (vitamin c).
Yikes, lots of sugar in all of those and we’ve only just touched the surface. Here is what you can be sure of: commercial candy will contain trans fat, GMOs, high fructose corn syrup, msg, and tons of chemicals. Overall, there are a lot of healthier ways to approach Halloween and to avoid those unwanted chemicals, GMOs and exorbitant amounts of sugar. Even a simple box of raisins, a bag of mini carrots, organic pretzels or organic fruit leathers would do. Think outside the box.
