Top 10 Essential Oils to Relieve Anxiety


Mrs. Crimmins, I’m sorry to say that you will need to be on anti-anxiety medicine for the rest of your life. Sadly this is a chemical imbalance in your brain and medicine is the only option.

Wow, that was my diagnosis about 5 years ago after finally seeing a psychiatrist about my crippling anxiety that I have dealt with my whole life.

About 8 months ago, after having been introduced to doTERRA Essential Oils, and with a steady yoga practice I decided I was sick of being dependent on a pill. Without telling my friends, and even my husband I began weaning off my medication. It was an experiment. Could I survive without my Zoloft? Could I function in my day to day life? Afterall, I had been emotionally numb for about 4 years. The short answer is yes.

With the help of doTERRA Essential Oils, I am now medication free and am managing my anxiety. I have been panic attack free and can approach life with joy and grace.

Disclaimer: I do not suggest going off your meds, and in no way offer this advice as a treatment for psychological disorders. My advice is to use these essential oils as a complimentary therapy for whatever medication you are currently on. Only you know your body.

10 Oils to Relieve Anxiety:

#1 Balance- Balance is a beautiful blend of spruce, rosewood, blue tansy and frankincense. It is great for anxiety as well as depression. It is know to be mood lifting, stress reducing, a nerve tonic and a good cell re-generator.

Apply Balance on the feet daily, back of the neck, over the heart and on the wrists – rub wrists together and inhale.

#2 BreatheThis blend is so versatile, being used for all respiratory issues. This blend includes laurel leaf, peppermint, eucalyptus, melaleuca, lemon and ravensara. For anxiety, it is great to help you breathe deeper, and calm your system down.

Rub a couple drops on your chest/ heart center to help your nerves relax and open your airways to breathe.

#3  Lavender – We are all familiar with the therapeutic benefits of Lavender oil as it can calm and relax. It makes it a no-brainer for anxiety.

Use Lavender to help you sleep. Diffuse in the air by your bed, apply 1-2 drops to feet before bed, and add 1-2 drops on your pillow at night.

#4  FrankincenseAh, Frankincense – the King of Oils. Frankincense is the most valuable essential oil for slowing and deepening breathing, helping to allay fear, anxiety, nervous tension and stress. When in doubt, use Frankincense.

This is a great oil for everyday use to help maintain overall cellular balance, and also for those times of extreme anxiety. Diffuse, inhale, rub 1-2 drops on feet and back of neck mixed with lavender.

#5  Wild Orange- As with all citrus oils, wild orange is a great mood lifter. It relieves anxiety, anger, and irritation often because of enhanced circulation and detoxifying of liver, and gall bladder.

Rub on the back of neck or bottoms of feet, and the followed by peppermint when you feel that doomsday anxiety starting to build.

#6  ElevationI absolutely love the way this smells. This is another blend that is great for both anxiety and depression and is known as the “Joyful Blend.” It is a blend of lavandin, tangerine, elemi, lemon myrtle, melissa, ylang ylang, osmanthus, and sandalwood.

Apply over the heart, bones behind the ears, ear tissue itself, neck, thymus, temples, across the brow of the forehead, and on the wrists with an expectation of feeling good and you will.

#7  Lemon – Lemon is another extremely versatile oil, but has been proven to help with anxiety. Lemon Oil is radiant, uplifting, reviving and stimulating. Lemon inspires trust and a sense of security; it relieves confusion and worry.  It can help you overcome obstacles and provide a clearer perspective.

Use this everyday in your water. Just add 1 drop to a glass of water and continue throughout the day.

#8  Serenity – This is such a wonderful calming blend that promotes a sense of well-being and relaxation. This blend consists of lavender, sweet marjoram, roman chamomile, ylang ylang, sandalwood, and vanilla bean.

Use 5 drops of this in a hot bath to relax. Or apply to back of neck and inhale through a diffuser. Apply a couple drops on the bottoms of your feet before sleep.

#9 Bergamot – This is a unique blend among the citrus oils, for its calming properties. Encourages the release of pent-up feelings— feelings that can lead not only to depression but to insomnia, anxiety and sudden mood swings.  It helps in addition, to redirect nervous energy away from unproductive and addictive behavior, helping us to rediscover spontaneity and optimism.  Bergamot oil helps us to relax and “let go.”

Apply to wrists, feet and back of neck.

#10 Patchouli - Psychologically Patchouli works through harmonizing, grounding and stabilizing the mind when over thinking and worry develop. Patchouli oil diminishes depression and eases anxiety by heightening a sense of joy in life. It helps in recovery from nervous exhaustion, stress and stress-related condition.

Apply to base of the skull and breathe aromas to calm spirit and eliminate chaotic thinking.

Essential Oil Anxiety Recipes:

Relieve Nervous and Agitated Feelings: Lavender 3 drops, Wild Orange 2 drops and Bergamot 1 drop added to 1 teaspoon of coconut oil; gently blend and apply to forearms with an expectation of feeling Peace and renewed energy.

Anxiety Relieving Blend: Frankincense 2 drops, Marjoram 2 drops, Geranium 3 drops, Clary Sage 3 drops, Wild Orange 2 drops; gently mix and inhale – apply to back of neck and enjoy.

Anti-Anxiety Diffuser Blend: Wild Orange Oil 5 drops, Patchouli 6 drops, Frankincense 6 drops, Geranium 8 drops, Bergamot 10 drops and Clary Sage 12 drops; Blend into a glass bottle and gently roll between hands and then add 4-6 drops to Lotus diffuser and enjoy.

Anti-Aggression Personal Blend: 1/8 ounce coconut oil, Lemon oil 2 drops, Bergamot Oil 4 drops, Ylang Ylang 3 drops, Sandalwood Oil 2 drops, Melissa 1 drop.

General Anxiety Blend: Rub 3-4 drops of Frankincense Oil or Serenity Oil Blend on the neck & base of skull.

    Good information but could you tell your readers if you are being paid or compensated by doTERRA Essential Oils for this post? Also, other than your own experience, is there any external research to support these claims? Thanks and glad you are able to deal with anxiety without the meds.

          Thanks for asking! It kind of depends on what you want. I usually mix it all into a glass jar with a dropper and then drop it into the roller ball. Typically, a 5 mL bottle can hold 85 drops and a 10mL bottle can hold 250 drops.

    Congrats on experiment. Experimenting is good (although it would have been safer to let someone know.) How long did it take for you to transition off the medication and go natural?

      Hi Todd. You are right, it is definitely safe to let someone know. After about a week, I did let my husband know. It took me around 6-8 weeks to fully wean off my medication. I did it very slow and gradual. Thanks for your comment!

      Thanks for your comment Cindy. The doTERRA oils are incredible. When I 1st started, I started with the Family Physicians Kit that comes with Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Melaleuca, Oregano, Frankincense, Deep Blue®, Breathe, DigestZen®, and On Guard™. I completely replaced my medicine cabinet with oils and now treat headaches, insomnia, colds, diarrhea, muscle aches etc with essential oils. Not to mention having more energy. There are so many ways to use them for your health. Hope you get to explore a little more.

    Hi! I am currently experiencing some postpartum anxiety. I’ve dealt with and overcome anxiety before but I just can’t shake it this time. I have some samples of breathe, serenity, balance, citrus bliss, and elevation. What’s the best way to utilize these to bring myself back to a fairly normal state? I’d like to know your recommendations for which oils, frequency, and amount. I am not on medication, never have been, and do not want to be. Thanks for your help!

      Hi Sarah,
      Using essential oils are all about consistency. I use Balance every day on my feet. The more exposure you have to the oils, the quicker you will feel effects. Breathe is a great one to use during a panic attack, or high levels of anxiety as it encourages your body to take deep breaths. Overall, you want to be using these everyday. Look at the anxiety recipes I posted, and choose one that feels right to you and start taking that cocktail everyday. I would also encourage taking the Life Long Vitality Supplements everyday as well. Huge help. Hope that helps! Good luck. It takes time, but week after week you will start to feel better and better.

    Hi. Thanks for the information. I was wondering how many times you can put these oils on. I have them and have been experimenting for a couple of days. Not much change yet, but I am very hopeful. How many times throughout the day is it safe to apply these oils?

      Hi Jackie,

      I apply them several times a day. You can’t overdose on essential oils. You just have to remember that is takes time for your body to change. You are working this out a cellular level, so depending on how unbalanced all that is it will take time. It took me several months before I felt like I was getting back to my normal. Keep at it girl and kuddos for you for starting the process of healing :)

        Hi Mary,

        I have been suffering from insomnia, I’ll go to bed at 9:30 to get a head start and cant fall asleep until around 2 am. I have been on prozac for 5 years and started weening myself off. I decided maybe this is not the right time so I went back on the full dose. I do however want to get off it eventually and was wondering if the oils are safe to put on while on medication? I ordered the “serenity” blend and am waiting for it in the mail. I am aware that this is all phsycological and was wondering how the oils can cure my insomnia if it is phsychologically based? Thanks!!!

          They are absolutely safe to use while you are medication. They are a great compliment. They are able to work with psychological issues because they are all still issues of the brain. When used aromatically the essential oils travel through the receptor sites in your nose and access the Limbic System of the brain that deals with emotions, memories, trauma, your stress response, fight and flight response, hormone response. The oils help bring your body back into balance. Please keep me posted on how it goes. I also love the Balance blend combined with the Serenity. There are several other individual oils that work on insomnia including Roman Chamomile, Vetiver and Lavender.

    Thanks for being so open and informational regarding your personal experience. I am interested in trying the oils, but find that they are pretty EXPENSIVE for my “senior” social security budget. I need to know if they can be injested since I can’t use them externally or in a diffuser due to family members who have severe allergies. What would you recommend I try first for stress and anxiety. REFUSE to take Valium anymore after confirming that it contributes to dementia. Who needs that, but I definately need help. Thanks.

    Thanks so much for sharing. I’m trying to do the same thing myself. Just a matter of time to collect the oils and then use them on a daily basis. I love Balance, but since it’s new to me sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Other times it’s ClaryCalm that works and other times it doesn’t. I think I’m just going through a very high anxiety/mania time right now. Looking forward to feeling balanced again. Thank you for the encouraging post.

    If you were going to mix a 10ml rollerball to apply for anxiety, how would you mix it? What oil/oils and how many drops? Thanks!

      Hi Angie! It might depend on how severe your anxiety is and what you need that is personal to you. You could start off with one of the recipes I created and blending that in a rollerball. Maybe the general “anxiety relieving blend” and multiply the oils until you fill the container. Hope that helps!

    Which oils and or blends do you use on a daily basis and how do you apply as your anxiety control? You listed several single oils and several blends. Interested which ones you like the best.

      Hi Sarah! I change what I use depending on the season or how I’m feeling. I’d say my top 2 to use for anxiety are Balance and Serenity. I use those all the time! I also love lemon and frankincense.
