Top 10 Essential Oils to Support Anxious Feelings


If you have never experienced anxious feelings, chances are you are lying!

I have struggled with both very low and sad feelings as well as intense anxious feelings. Whether it be a new social setting, or just an imbalance in my brain – I was sick and tired of letting this rule my life. It kept me home alone, saying “no” to things out of fear, and on days I couldn’t breathe and my skin felt like I had little ants crawling around inside. No fun at all!

Thankfully, I was able to help promote whole body relaxation by using several different essential oils.

Below I’ve compiled a list of 10 different therapeutic essential oils you can use to uplift the mind and body. You can use just one oil or several oils at one time. They create a beautiful aroma when mixed together. What appeals to one person may not appeal to the next person. The most important thing you should know is to use them with consistency. Please remember they are not a magic potion, but instead a beautiful way to promote harmony to the body, mind, and spirit one day at a time.

See, our sense of smell is the most powerful influencer on mood. Just think about when you come across that cologne of an old boyfriend and suddenly you get butterflies in your stomach. The aroma of Essential oils have that same effect. So allow these oils to encourage balance in your body.

This is a beautiful blend of spruce, howood, blue tansy and frankincense. It is the grounding blend that creates a sense of calm and well being. It is known to help promote whole body relaxation, lessen stress, act as a nerve tonic, and supports cellular health for overall well being.

Apply the Grounding Blend on the feet daily, back of the neck, over the heart and on the wrists – rub wrists together and inhale. I love mixing this oil with the Calming Blend.

This blend is so versatile to support the respiratory system.  This blend includes laurel leaf, peppermint, eucalyptus, melaleuca, lemon and ravensara leaf, and cardamom seed. In those moments when those anxious feelings seem to intensify, this is a great blend to help you breathe deeper, open up your airways, and encourage calm feelings.

Rub a couple drops on your chest/ heart center to help your nerves relax and open your airways to breathe.

We are all familiar with the therapeutic benefits of Lavender as it can soothe the body and mind. It makes it a no-brainer to use for those anxious feelings. This is definitely a go-to oil with great calming and relaxing properties.

Use Lavender to help promote a restful night’s sleep. Diffuse in the air by your bed, apply 1-2 drops to feet before bed, and add 1-2 drops on your pillow at night.

Ah, Frankincense – the King of Oils. Frankincense is the most foundational essential oil for anxious feelings. It helps to slow and deepen restricted breathing and helps to promote feelings of peace, relaxation, satisfaction, and overall wellness.When in doubt, use Frankincense.

This is a great oil for everyday use to help maintain overall cellular balance, and it also promotes a healthy inflammatory response and acts as an overall tonic to the body’s systems, helping them function optimally. Diffuse, inhale, rub 1-2 drops on feet and back of neck mixed with lavender. I also love mixing this with orange essential oil.

As with all citrus, orange is a great mood lifter for the mind and spirit. It supports the body against panic, nervousness, anger, and irritation often because of its cleansing and purifying agents on the liver. Orange also contains powerful antioxidants that help maintain overall health.

Rub on the back of neck or bottoms of feet, and the followed by peppermint when you feel that fear and anxious feelings starting to build. Smells wonderful when blended with Frankincense! (Remember this oil is photosensitive – avoid direct exposure to sunlight for 12-24hrs after applying topically.)

#6 Joyful Blend

I absolutely love the way this smells. This is another blend that is great for enhancing a positive mood and energizing the mind and body. It absolutely invites more joy! It is a blend of lavandin, tangerine, elemi, lemon myrtle, melissa, ylang ylang, osmanthus, and sandalwood.

Apply over the heart, bones behind the ears, ear tissue itself, neck, thymus, temples, across the brow of the forehead, and on the wrists with an expectation of feeling good and you will. After a long, stressful day, take a bath with a few drops of this blend to help relieve stress and restore the mind and body.

Lemon is another extremely versatile oil. Lemon oil is radiant, uplifting, reviving and stimulating. Lemon inspires trust and a sense of security; it relieves confusion and worry.  It encourages the user to overcome obstacles and provide a clearer perspective. When diffused, Lemon is very uplifting and energizing and has been shown to improve mood and cognitive ability.

Use this everyday in your water. Just add 1 drop to a glass of water and continue throughout the day. This is a great one to diffuse as well mixed with bergamot or orange.

One of my favorites! It is such a wonderful relaxing blend that promotes a sense of well-being and calm. This blend consists of lavender, sweet marjoram, roman chamomile, ylang ylang, sandalwood, and vanilla bean.

Use 5 drops of this in a hot bath to relax. Or apply to back of neck and inhale through a diffuser. Apply a couple drops on the bottoms of your feet before sleep. Smells wonderful with the Grounding Blend!

Bergamot is unique among citrus oils due to its ability to be both uplifting and calming, making it ideal to help with anxious and sad feelings. In addition, it helps to redirect nervous energy away from unproductiveness, helping us to rediscover spontaneity and optimism.  Bergamot oil helps us to relax and “let go.”

Apply to wrists and back of neck. Apply to the feet before bedtime or use with fractionated coconut oil for a calming and relaxing massage. (Remember this oil is very photosensitive – avoid direct exposure to sunlight for 24-49hrs after applying topically.)

Psychologically, Patchouli works through harmonizing, grounding, and stabilizing the mind when over thinking and worry develop. Patchouli oil diminishes sad feelings and eases anxious feelings by heightening a sense of joy in life. It helps in recovery from nervous exhaustion, and stress.

Apply to base of the skull and breathe aromas to calm spirit and eliminate chaotic thinking. Combine with Vetiver and apply to the bottoms of feet to help calm emotions.
